Purine requiring strains of Shigellae.

چکیده
The importance of growth factors in the nutrition of shigellae was recognized by Koser and Saunders (1935) and it was shown that the growth factors present in tissue extract could be replaced by nicotinic acid (Koser et al., 1938). The importance of nicotinic acid and nicotinamide as growth factors in the nutrition of shigellae has been shown by Dorfman et al. (1939). Reports of other vitamins as essential requirements are to be found in the literature (Weil and Black, 1944; Bernheimer, 1946). In the course of an investigation into the nutritional requirements of members of the genus Shigella (Sen, 1959), two strains of Shigella boydii were found to have specific growth requirements for purine derivatives.

Role of M cells in initial antigen uptake and in ulcer formation in the rabbit intestinal loop model of shigellosis.
Strains of Shigella flexneri with different invasive and pathogenic potentials were inoculated into the intestinal lumen of acutely ligated loops in nonimmune rabbits. After 90 min, tissues processed for ultrastructural as well as light microscopy showed that the bacilli were phagocytosed by M cells over lymphoid follicles of Peyer's patches and carried in vacuoles into the epithelium. Nonpatho...
متن کاملIsolation of Shigellae
The efficiencies of three enrichment broths and four plating media for isolation of enteric pathogens were compared from 1,117 stool specimens. Direct streaking proved to be inferior to enrichment, detecting only 50% of the salmonellae and 61% of the shigellae. By contrast, Selenite Broth (SF) found 90% of the total salmonellae isolates and 82% of the shigellae isolates. Gram-Negative Broth (GN...
متن کاملRole for the female in bacterial conjugation in Escherichia coli.
Hfr and F' Lac male strains of Escherichia coli were mated with purine-requiring females which had been starved for purine. These females formed mating pairs with the males. However, a mating in the absence of purine markedly reduced the yield of recombinants. Transfer of F' Lac or of lambda prophage also occurred infrequently. It was concluded that deoxyribonucleic acid transfer from male to f...
متن کاملNutritional requirements of shigellae for growth in a minimal medium.
Most (about 81%) of the clinical isolates of shigellae that were tested failed to grow in a minimal medium. Of the auxotrophic isolates belonging to the four Shigella species, 98% grew in a minimal medium containing methionine, nicotinic acid, and tryptophan. The combination of methionine and tryptophan appears to be an obligatory requirement for Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 strains, while t...
